This is a test…this is only a test

Funny when you’re on a road trip and when you have the iPod on shuffle how ideas come about for a playlist. On the way to the 16th annual Essence Music Festival me and my queen was on our way down to New Orleans and a track from Michael Jackson, Michael Manring, Donald Fagen, and Michael Franks came on back to back and at that moment I made a “On-the-Go” playlist with these four artist and it made the drive down to there pretty relaxing so here we are in regards to what you are hearing now.

Now the other question? Do make this two podcast or just one 2 hour podcast. I try to keep podcast a little of an hour but since I didn’t get a chance to bring a podcast last weekend and since I try and bring you the podcast on the weekend why not bring you a extra long podcast because this is day that you should be able to kick back and chillax right?

The cool thing I come to realize when putting together these music podcast is that the line up I bring you I think you will never see this type of playlist heard on a commercial radio and to me that makes me proud because as always my goal is to bring you relaxing, quality relaxing music.

So as always, kick back, relax and take you some “me” time and let you mind just flow with the music.

This line-up  went through a couple of changes before I ended up with the tunes you are hearing now. At first I had more vocal tracks in here but it just didn’t feel right. When you do everything yourself (finding the artwork, writing the show notes, links) and sometimes it’s a handful but the cool thing is that in the end you call the shots; if you like the playlist you keep it, if you don’t, chuck it.

I thank God that blank CDs are not expensive because when I make my playlist I burn it to a disc in mp3 form because this way it pulls all the info about the tune and it saves the music line-up. What you are hearing is the 3 line up so I ended up burning 3 CDs which means the other 2 line ups you will never here because if you did it will change the entire tone of the podcast.

The Title for this podcast came from the first four tracks you will hear because the “old” comes from the track by Vince Guaraldi, the “new” comes from the track from the talent trio (Doug Fresh, Fave, Todd “The Big La” Kelley) and “something borrowed blue” is a couple of tracks from the late great Tito Puente. Something about Latin music is so vibrant, so alive and makes you feel the music notes. To blend Mr. Puente with relaxing tunes I believed the mixture is right. I hope you enjoy the selection and have a great weekend and work week.

I first started listening to Macedonia’s latest podcast, “BSOTS 102 – Foundation Media Showcase (vol. 3)” earlier Wednesday while working out but had to put it on pause because me and my queen was out and about so now I pop it back on at 3:45 in the morning and all I can say is two words…

When I hear commercial radio I want to cry…literally. R&B is all but dead in my eyes and hip-hop? If you grew in the 80s and hear what’s on the radio now it makes you want to throw up and you would think, “Where the hell is the quality when it comes to this genre?” It’s still here and I want to thank cats like Todd Kelley , Nikki, Fave and this man, Macedonia when he produces podcast like this. I should be sleep because I want to get up early and snap some photos but I can’t turn off his latest podcast because these cuts take me back to a time when I first discovered hip-hop in a small town in Illinois…when MTV, BET, VH1 played videos (man those were da dayz) and when you listened to a hip-hop track over and over again so you could learn the lyrics and impress your friends and the girls.

This collection of artists that Macedonia is bringing to the masses is something you will not get tired of and it will make you do some serious hip-hop crate diggin’ because what’s beautiful about this set is that it gives me faith that there are still artists that are still true to the game when it comes to the essence of art and gift of hip-hop and this is why we as music lovers have to support the men and women in these genre and share with the masses, especially the youth to let them know this is the true face of hip-hop.

When first moving over to Missouri the music I was hooked on was Acoustic Alchemy and one of my favorite tunes from them is “Overnight Sleeper“. I have always loved the acoustic guitar but when I heard that beautiful composition I was hooked. From there it lead me on the journey to seek out artists and groups that plays acoustic instruments which now is leading me to try and come with different podcasts each time.

What drives me on the music I enjoy is how it makes me feel in the moment. This selection of music is a collection that when you are
spending quality time with yourself or spending quality time with the one that you love in the late evening. Sometime I worry if I will repeat myself with the music selection I bring you but when I listen to the playlist while writing my show notes I come to the conclusion I think you don’t mind.

Most of the music that you’re hearing is from my private stash. The beauty of instrumental and acoustic tunes is you have to be on point…they is no producer to make notes sound better, it’s just the musician, his arrangement and his instrument. I have to vocal tracks in the line up and with these vocalist I think you will dig it.

Don’t know where this idea came from…well maybe in a little way I do. I love public radio and I love the fact that on a Sunday that right before you are about to head back to another stressful work week (that’s about 80% of the workforce, for the rest of you who love their work, you people make me sick.   j/k )

I want to bring you a podcast where you can soak in the rest of your weekend with some of the best music that you will not hear on the radio and something where you go and sit out on your patio, porch bench, on your porch, soak in the fresh air, watching the sunrise or the sunset. May sound corny but I love music and that is how I want music to make me feel before heading into the lion’s den of the work force.

Every so often I get in the mood for music with lyrics. To me I love instrumental tunes because for me it’s like a “blank canvas” and it’s up to the listeners to paint his or her on story when it comes to their soundtrack of life. But this podcast I broke down and found music from songwriters and singers that I admire and don’t mind listening to their “soundtrack of life”.

You may have heard these track or maybe you haven’t from my previous podcasts but one thing is for sure…I try and bring you some of the best music because in this day and age many artists are here today and gone today. In this next hour not only will you hear great music but pretty cool vocalists.

This past month I’ve been going back and forth in regards to getting rid of my Facebook account not only for the privacy issues(we geeks and power users were not really worried about the privacy issue because we know how to use Facebook because to be honest what is privacy because anything you put out on the web if someone wish to find it and use it they can…sorry for the rat hole); the reason I bring up Facebook is that if I would have deleted my account I would not have come across the lovely Shannon Lee (pictured on the upper left). As with MySpace you can come across some very talented artists and I’m glad I have had the blessing to correspond with Ms. Lee. Her EP will be released this Summer and track #3 is her song, “Friday Night“.

Every so often I open my bias ears and allow singers enter my ears and allow singers to tell their story their way and sometimes it teaches me that yes, sometimes it’s pays to listen to others way of think in the way of lyrics. The music lineup consists of artists I don’t mind hearing over and over again. (Now that I write this I’m going to have to produce another one because I don’t my girl Tanita Takiram, Donald Fagen, Tracy Thorn, Gary Clark, Paddy McAloon so I have my work cut out for me…but in a very good way).

Today working from home was kind of different. Yes, I had the same customers that most of time didn’t know what they wanted when it comes to setting up a car rental(it still gives me a headache just thinking how lazy people have becoming when comes to being prepared but that’s another post altogether) but the last 2-3 hours I found myself calm and in good spirits and at first I couldn’t figure it out until I realized I had the Opera, “Carmen” playing above me on our public television station.

I have never been into opera but for some reason this captured my attention. I didn’t even realize it was Carmen until I recognized some of the compositions and in my mind I was like, “this is Carmen, I know it is”…and sure enough it was. I have always said I want to know more about classical music. My love for Jazz, Ambient and other music I truly enjoy but something about classical music gets a hold of me and is really a challenge. I have a long way to catch up on the Jazz realm but classical music is really cool.

I’m not going to lie, the orchestra, the arrangement of the music, the stage, the singing was a delight to see. Two things came to mind: I must begin to become a “doer” and not just a “watching” when it comes to supporting public television and public radio and second, me and my queen must start going to symphonies and operas. Music for me is really universal and by watching this production of “Carmen” just proved that to me. I have tried to watch opera and to be honest it never caught my attention but after going off I found myself standing up at the end of the show in my study clapping and saying “bravo”, I was truly moved.

At first I was upset that nothing was on The Travel Channel and it was a Law & Order:Special Victims Unit marathon and at that time I was not in the mood for that because to be honest I truly believe I have seen every episode more than 3 times…really I have but something told me to turn it on our public channel KETC-TV (channel 9) and see what was on and I caught the beginning of “Carmen” and I was hooked. I was a treat to see something of substance on television and a blessing that I had patience to watch this wonderful opera

Bravo.
